Coptic keyboard online

Questions

How do I type Coptic letters?

Tap or click the letters on the screen, or type on your computer keyboard: each key shows, in small grey, the key that types it. The letters are on the same keys as in the CS Avva Shenouda font, so if you have typed Coptic in Word before, you already know them. Then press Copy text and paste where you need it.

How do I add a jinkim?

On the screen, tap the letter first, then the jinkim key: the mark goes on the letter just before the cursor. Tap it again to remove it.

On a computer keyboard, press ` before the letter, as with the CS fonts: `n gives ⲛ̀.

How do I put a line over an abbreviation, like ⲡ̅ⲟ̅ⲥ̅?

Select the letters, then press overline: every selected letter gets the line, and the lines join into one. Without a selection, overline goes on the letter before the cursor. On a computer keyboard you can also press = before each letter, as with the CS fonts.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Open this page in your phone's browser and tap the keys: there is nothing to install. On a phone the letters are in alphabet order, so they are big enough to tap. To type Coptic in every app, you need a Coptic keyboard app instead.

How do I write my name in Coptic?

Type it by sound, letter by letter: Mark is Ⲙⲁⲣⲕⲟⲥ, George is Ⲅⲉⲱⲣⲅⲓⲟⲥ, Mina is Ⲙⲏⲛⲁ. Names of saints usually have a set spelling, so check it in a church book. The Coptic alphabet page shows the sound of each letter.

Will my text look right in Word or PowerPoint?

Yes. It is standard Unicode, so any Unicode Coptic font shows it. If you see empty boxes, choose a font such as Noto Sans Coptic or Antinoou. Text typed with the old CS fonts can be turned into Unicode with the converter.
